Hormonal Imbalances
Definition of hormone
Hormones are chemical messengers that are released from glands and
organs, move through your bloodstream, and enter tissues where they
effect the regulation of everything from reproduction to general health
and well being. Hormones can be thought of as the regulating chemical
force that moves you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Saliva
testing is a simple and highly accurate way to test hormone levels
Causes of Hormonal Imbalances
Poor nutrition, bad diets, and yo-yo diets are often behind hormonal
imbalance. This is especially true of women who follow a low-fat,
high-carbohydrate diet. These women often suffer from insulin
resistance, which disrupts their body's glucose/energy metabolism.
Stress also affects hormones. Stress leads to the depletion of
the adrenals, especially when weakened by poor nutrition. The
liver and kidneys are also affected by stress. (See page on
Stress).
As the adrenals, liver, and kidneys become dysfunctional, other glands
and organs are affected, especially the thyroid and pituitary.
Environmental exposures to toxins affect the hormones in our bodies.
Many chemicals attach to, block, or activate our hormonal receptor
sites.
